August 29, 2024(2 events) 1:00 pm: OKO App Workshop- Virtual Session – If you're interested in learning about the OKO app (available for i-Phone users) and how you can use it to enhance your ability to navigate in the community, we have the workshop for you! BALANCE will be providing a two-part workshop on the OKO app, which will hosted by our Orientation and Mobility Specialists and Assistive Technology Instructors. The first session will be held through Zoom, which will cover the features and strategies for using the OKO app effectively. The second session will be held in-person for demonstrations and reviewing strategies discussed in the first session. Participants will have the opportunity to practice using the app with the support and feedback from workshop facilitators. zoom 6:30 pm: Mental Health Pop-Up Session: "How to Cope with Grief and Loss of Sight" – Taking care of your mental health is as important as taking care of your physical health. This summer BALANCE is pleased to provide a special series of online mental health support pop-up sessions. Open to all persons living with a visual disability, these workshops provide a safe, welcoming space to explore effective strategies for managing stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. Title: How to Cope with Grief and Loss of Sight Description: This workshop led by Social Worker and BALANCE Counsellor Melanie Marsden will cover the 5 stages of grief and accompanying coping strategies. We will also challenge common beliefs and misconceptions around the impact of sight loss and living a fulfilling life. September 30, 2024(1 event) 6:30 pm: Evening Sharing Space Support Group – This support group offers a welcoming space to express yourself, share your experiences, and connect with others who understand your journey. Facilitated by Melanie Marsden, a trained professional with lived experience of blindness, the group is designed to help you explore your thoughts and feelings in a confidential and supportive setting. By sharing our stories and listening to one another, we can learn valuable coping strategies and gain new perspectives. Throughout the program, we will also tap into resources through informative podcasts and discussions, introducing participants to support they might not have known about before. At the end of the 12 weeks, participants will leave with a sense of empowerment, equipped with more resources and deeper connections, and having integrated their experiences in a meaningful way.
