Adaptive Daily Living Skills Instructor, Part-Time Contract

The ADLS Instructor at BALANCE works as a member of the BALANCE team, 12-15 hours/week. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the position assesses and addresses performance of activities of daily living in the home. The position will work with clients to enable their independent living skills and ability to adapt their environment to function independently. The focus of this position is to address the complex needs of clients with multiple barriers to participation and independence. Working with other team members as needed, the position will address personal barriers to independence and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Suitable applicants must demonstrate the following:
  • Conducts assessments, including home-based environmental assessments
  • Develops program plans and provides education, on a one-to-one basis
  • Evaluates progress and makes internal and external referrals that are relevant to BALANCE’s services
  • Attends and contributes to monthly case conferences
  • Provides support to other programs as possible and relevant, such as: mental health and wellness; pre-employment, Assistive Technology team
  • Personalized Training: Develop and implement training programs tailored to each client’s needs, prioritizing flexibility to help them thrive and reach their goals.
  • Technology Implementation: Set up and manage the necessary technology within clients’ homes to facilitate independent living and improve daily functioning.
  • Environmental Adaptation: Adapt and modify clients’ home environments by accommodating their specific needs and adjusting to various home settings as required for optimal comfort and safety.

Qualifications:

  • OTA/PTA graduate preferred
  • Strong adult education/instructional/teaching skills
  • Excellent professional judgment, conflict resolution and inter-professional communication skills
  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills: oral, written
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with clients, other staff, and members of the community with whom the clients engage or wish to engage
  • Ability to take initiative, be adaptable/adaptive, and use creativity for problem-solving, especially in the home setting
  • Efficient time management and organizational skills
  • Willingness to travel within the city of Toronto and work in client homes
  • Strong ability to work independently while operating as a reliable member of the team
